Visual Merchandising for Retail Success at Your Salon
The right visual merchandising can boost the retail sales of your salon or spa more than you might imagine. Below, we will discuss how you can use visual merchandising to boost your salon's profits, including an Overview of Visual Merchandising, Examples of Salon Success Stories, and Using the Right Tools: Display Tables, Retail Shelving, and Props in Visual Merchandising.
What is Visual Merchandising?
Merchandising is the presentation of a salon or spa and its its merchandise to the client. In other words, how, why, when, and where your salon's retail products are placed and displayed. The basic meaning of Visual Merchandising is the manner in which a salon owner combines her products, the salon's environment, and retail space into a stimulating and engaging display to encourage the sale of the salon's products or services. The elements of visual merchandising include display tables, retail fixtures, and the salon's use color, spacing, lighting, products, packaging, and product information. Other elements of visual merchandising in salons include the salon's use of its client's sensory inputs such as smell, touch, and sound to create a connection between the salon, its products and the client.
Salon Visual Merchandising
Visual Merchandising in Salons and Spas emerged as business savvy salon owners saw an opportunity to use free space or check out counters to add sales of higher margin personal care products to their bottom lines. Much of evolution of Visual Merchandising in salons and spas can be attributed to the development of professional Visual Merchandising as a practice in retail stores in general. There are however, a couple of key points of distinction. First, salons and spas, by the nature of the services they render, have a captive potential retail customer base longer than most retail stores. That is, people often sit and wait on their turn or sit while the service is being rendered, often without much other distraction. There are more ''retail impression'' points which if used properly, provide salon owners with a chance to develop more sales. Second, the service professional in salons and spas carry a significant amount of influence over the client--if the professionals did not, it is unlikely the client would use that particular professional. So any slight hint or suggestion from the professional during the performance of the service and/or check out counter will have a greater influence than a typical retail store's sale chatter.
Rules in Visual Merchandising
As much as you may hear otherwise, there are no absolute rules for salons in visual merchandising. Successful salons, in the retail sales aspect, employ all types of visual merchandising techniques. Clearly, there are some basic ''rules,'' but the ''rules'' also exist to be broken for striking effects. The bottom line in visual merchandising is the bottom line. Whatever visual merchandising techniques a salon or spa uses that increases sales is correct--as long as it works.
With that stated, Salons and Spas should have the following goals when developing a visual merchandising plan:
Create an easy and convenient way for clients to purchase the salon's retail products
Use display tables, retail shelves, and service counters to distribute the products in a way that makes sense to your customers (e.g., use different displays for different categories or brands of products)
Locate the products in a location that is convenient and visible so that it is easy for the client to to self-select
Make it possible for salon customer coordinate multiple product purchases (e.g., the use of vertical color banding on a shelving display so that if a customer wants shampoo, conditioner, gel, and hairspray from one brand, the client can easily see and grab all the products together from one display)
Provide product information and pricing
Inform the client about trends, fashions and promotions at strategically located positions.
